The Federal Government has announced an increase in electricity generation from 3,951 megawatts (MW) to 4,300MW between March 28 and April 10, signaling gradual improvement in the nation’s power sector.

The development was disclosed in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

According to the statement, the increase aligns with earlier assurances by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who had pledged improved electricity supply within a two-week period during a Power Sector Working Group meeting.

Tunji attributed the improvement largely to increased gas supply to thermal power plants, which rose from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to over 704 mmscfd within the same period.

He noted that mechanical availability remained stable, peaking at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability increased from approximately 4,208MW to more than 4,694MW, reflecting improved efficiency in converting gas to electricity.

“Despite minor fluctuations on some days, the overall trend indicates gradual recovery in the power sector, driven by improved gas supply and better coordination among stakeholders,” Tunji said.

He emphasised that the strong link between gas availability and power generation highlights the need for sustained interventions in the gas-to-power value chain, given Nigeria’s dependence on thermal power.

To consolidate the gains, Adelabu recently inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee to enhance coordination, ensure real-time monitoring, and sustain gas supply to generation companies.

“The committee will address bottlenecks in gas delivery, strengthen collaboration between gas producers and power generation companies, and ensure more stable electricity supply nationwide,” Tunji added.

He assured that the government remains committed to sustaining and improving the gains recorded in the coming weeks through ongoing reforms and targeted interventions.

Meanwhile, the minister has tasked the new management of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency to improve its internally generated revenue (IGR) and reduce reliance on government funding.

During a meeting with the agency’s Managing Director, Olusegun Adesayo, and Board Chairman, Ikechi Nwosu, Adelabu urged the agency to expand meter testing centres across the country to enhance its operations.

He also called for stronger collaboration between the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria and NEMSA to address manpower shortages, particularly in the area of meter installation.

Adelabu reiterated the need to train more installers to accelerate efforts to close the country’s metering gap, adding that plans should be made to establish meter testing centres across all geo-political zones.

He expressed confidence in the new management and assured that the full board of the agency would soon be inaugurated.
